FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Southampton Town Supervisor Jay Schneiderman has been appointed by his fellow Supervisors and Mayors to be the Chair the East End Supervisors and Mayors Association (EESMA), taking over the function from former Shelter Island Supervisor James Dougherty. He is sharing his responsibilities with Vice-Chair Peter Sartorius, Mayor of Quogue.  It is Schneiderman’s second time as Chair, as he also held the position when he was Supervisor of the Town of East Hampton.

Realizing that there is strength in numbers, EESMA was formed to enhance the quality of life for all the residents of the five East End towns (East Hampton, Riverhead, Shelter Island, Southampton, Southold) and ten incorporated villages (Dering Harbor, East Hampton, Greenport, North Haven, Quogue, Sagaponack, Sag Harbor, Southampton, Westhampton Beach, West Hampton Dunes), tackling those regional issues that would benefit from a common voice, agenda and goals.   Such recent topics included:

  • Shared Services and Consolidation Opportunities
  • Coastal Erosion and Policy
  • Affordable Housing
  • The Opioid Epidemic
  • Economic Development and Tourism
  • Septic System Upgrades/Clean Water Initiatives
  • Tick and Mosquito Control
  • Regional Transportation Issues

NYS Assemblymen Fred Thiele and Anthony Palumbo, and County Legislators Bridget Fleming and Al Krupski have standing places on each agenda, both to hear discussion items, and to report to the group.  EESMA meets bi-monthly, with the first meeting of 2018 scheduled for February 21 in Sag Harbor.

Supervisor Schneiderman observed, “I am delighted to reprise my role as Chair of EESMA. It is an honor to be once again appointed by my peers to chair this important committee, which has become an increasingly pro-active voice and force for the people of the East End. I look forward to working collectively to address the challenges that lie ahead.”
