Town Approves Funds to Replace Playgrounds at Red Creek Park

The Town Board unanimously approved legislation sponsored by Councilwoman Christine P. Scalera to replace and improve the playground facilities at Red Creek Park in Hampton Bays. Currently there are two playgrounds at the Park that were built in the late 90’s and serve children ages 2 to 5 and 5 to 12 years old. The resolution authorizes funding to completely replace the safety surfaces and equipment at both playgrounds.

“The funding for this project comes from existing funds set aside for projects such as this at no further cost to the tax payer,” said Councilwoman Scalera, “ I am delighted that we will be able to bring new and updated playground equipment to the Town’s largest park facility and bring further enjoyment to our residents and visitors alike.”

According to the Parks and Recreation Department, the new playgrounds will continue to be for children ages 2 to 5 and 5 to 12 years old, and will meet or exceed American with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant playground standards. “The current facilities are at the end of their useful life,” said Chris Bean, the department’s Superintendent. “Typically public play equipment lasts about 10-12 years, and with the heavy usage at these playgrounds it makes sense to replace what’s there rather than continuing to try to repair it.” The project is anticipated to be completed by midsummer.
