Town Cracks Down On Illegal Signs

July 23, 2018

In an effort to clean up the visual environment, Town of Southampton Code Enforcement officers began removing more than 100 illegal advertising signs last week.  The signs were in the Town’s right of way (within 10 feet of the road) along Montauk Highway between Southampton and Bridgehampton.

Supervisor Schneiderman, outraged by the visual pollution asked Code Enforcement to enforce the laws on the books.

“We have devoted so much effort to preserve our natural beauty we are not going to let it be marred by illegal advertising on our roadways from companies looking to make a fast buck,” said Supervisor Schneiderman.

“Most of the signs were lawn signs but they have been showing up in large number in recent weeks causing visual pollution and a distraction to drivers, “said Steven Troyd, Town Code Compliance and Emergency Management Administrator.

Violators could face charges on four violations:

•Litter -  (Town Code  211-2(a))
•Road Obstruction -  (Town Code 287-16)
•Private use of a Right of Way -  (Town Code 287-7)
•and prohibited signs -  (Town Code 330-203-B3)

“The Town’s efforts will continue and those responsible for the visual pollution will be held accountable,” said Supervisor Schneiderman.
